On the 7th of July 2018 the Youth Empowerment Campaign had its second activation at Elkah Stadium (Cricket Oval) in Rockville, Soweto. The purpose of the event is to bring awareness on the importance of financial education and encourage entrepreneurship. In addition, the programme will create a platform for consumers to gain access to institutions that provide funding to young entrepreneurs. This event had actor, Oros Mampofu as its Master of Ceremonies and he was supported by YFM DJs for entertainment and media coverage. Lending from the lessons learnt from the initial activation in Tembisa on the 30th of June 2018, the Youth Empowerment Campaign focused on Small, Medium and Micro-sized Enterprises (SMMEs) and money management. The Financial Sector Conduct Authority (FSCA) urged the participating stakeholders to place more emphasis on what their exhibition stalls had to offer.
The following stakeholders were in attendance: the Small Enterprise Development Agency (SEDA), Department of Trade and Industry (DTI), Companies and Intellectual Property Commission (CIPC), Department of Labour (DOL), Harambee Youth Employment Accelerator, the Credit Ombudsman, the City of Ekurhuleni and the National Empowerment Fund (NEF). Representatives kicked off the event by firstly providing a brief introduction of their organisation and what they had to offer. This assisted the participants to navigate through the stalls and inquire about information that is relevant to them.
A key observation which was reiterated from the event in Soweto was the desperation which is experienced by the unemployed youth of the community. Many had no source of income and had hopes of becoming entrepreneurs. Though the idea of starting a business seemed critical to them, accessing funding was highlighted as a major source of difficulty. Many of the participants had an opportunity to directly inquire with the stakeholders about the procedures which could have hindered them from acquiring capital for their small business. The stakeholders were dedicated and provided one-on-one sessions with the participants to deliver key financial education and business information.
The final activation is set to take place on the 14th of July 2018 at the Giant Stadium in Soshanguve. Oros Mampofu and comedian Skhumba Hlophe will be in attendance in order to capture the interest of the youth.
