Youth Empowerment Campaign in Tembisa

By Keketso Matlebyane

According to Statistics South Africa, the youth unemployment rate remained at a high 26,7% over the first quarter of 2018 (http://www.statssa.gov.za/?p=11129 Accessed 2 July 2018). With this reality, resources and opportunities are required in order to increase awareness on job opportunities, money management and entrepreneurship. The Youth Empowerment Campaign is characterised by a series of events in Tembisa, Soweto and Soshanguve. The purpose of the events is to bring awareness on the importance of financial education and encourage entrepreneurship. In addition, the programme will create a platform for consumers to gain access to institutions that provide funding to young entrepreneurs.

On the 30th of July 2018, 400 youth from Tembisa participated in The Financial Sector Conduct Authority (FSCA) Youth Empowerment Campaign at Moriting Park. The representatives of the Consumer Education Department provided consumer financial education and offered valuable solutions to achieve financial freedom. The following stakeholders collaborated with the FSCA during the Tembisa event: the Small Enterprise Development Agency (SEDA), Department of Trade and Industry (DTI), Companies and Intellectual Property Commission (CIPC), Department of Labour (DOL), the National Credit Regulator (NCR), Harambee Youth Employment Accelerator, the Credit Ombudsman, the Council for Debt Collectors, the City of Ekurhuleni and the National Empowerment Fund (NEF).

In order to draw the attention of the younger audience, Skhumba acted as the ambassador of the campaign. He is born and raised in Tembisa. This made him a recognisable figure who is capable of sharing his inspiring journey of becoming a radio personality on a popular radio station in South Africa. In the establishment of effective media coverage on the campaign, YFM was selected to promote the campaign through radio interviews, live reads and an outside broadcast during the event.
